España, Bélgica, Irlanda y Malta piden a la UE un alto el fuego en Gaza y protección para los civiles – Radio Centro

1 min read

“Presidents of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, and the Prime Ministers of Belgium, Ireland, and Malta have sent a letter to the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, calling for an urgent ceasefire in Gaza and the protection of civilians living there.

This request comes after the United Nations Secretary-General activated Article 99 of the United Nations Charter to call for a humanitarian ceasefire. However, the resolution presented to the UN Council was vetoed by the United States.

European leaders believe it is necessary to declare a lasting humanitarian ceasefire and take measures to protect the population of Gaza. They also call for a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine and offer financial and political support to the Palestinian Authority.

In their letter, the European leaders condemn Hamas’ terrorist attacks and defend Israel’s right to self-defense under International Humanitarian Law.

This is not the first time Pedro Sánchez has criticized the number of casualties in Gaza, which has caused a diplomatic crisis between Israel and Spain. Sánchez’s criticisms add to those of other European leaders, denouncing these as “dark hours for millions of people” and calling for actions from the European Union.
